Accused of giving a N150 million bribe to members of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos businessman Dr. Akintoye Akindele has been granted N500 million bail by a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama.

He was charged with making a partial payment of N50 million and soliciting a bribe worth N150 million.

Akindele was recently accused of soliciting the police a bribe of N150 million.

He was, however, charged by the authorities on Tuesday with a bribery-related offense. The plaintiff/applicant in the case with case number CR/595/2023 was Acting Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

The defendant allegedly sought to pay police officers looking into a case of fund diversion brought against him, according to the police prosecution team.

He allegedly offered the bribe so he could flee to another country.

According to the prosecution, the accused offense is a violation of Section 118 of the Penal Code Law.

However, after hearing the accusation read to him, Akindele entered a not-guilty plea and his attorney then requested bail on his behalf.

In a decision on Tuesday, Justice Hamza Muazu denied the prosecution’s request for additional detention of the defendant so that the police may complete their investigation. This came from prosecution attorney Simon Lough (SAN).

The offense for which the defendant was charged is typically bailable, Justice Muazu agreed with the defense attorney Henry Eni-Otu.

He set Akindele’s bail at N500 million with two sureties in the same amount.
