The All Progressives Congress (APC), which is now in power and is the opposition party, has been blamed for the explosion in Port Harcourt by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

The APC governorship rally was taking place in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State when two explosions were heard.

At least three people were hurt, but as of the time this report was filed, there had not yet been a verified death.

The APC and the PDP had earlier on Thursday engaged in verbal sparring over the purported denial of use of their campaign site in the state’s Etche Local Government Area.

The PDP, on the other hand, attacked Tonye Cole, the APC candidate for governor in the state, saying Rivers people could not rely on his assumed leadership. This came as the PDP criticized the APC for reportedly shutting off its proposed campaign location out of fear of defeat.

In response to the incident, Wike cleared his party, and his administration, from the explosion.

Speaking on behalf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during a rally on Friday in the state’s Oyigbo Local Government Area, he charged the APC with renting the location from one community segment and inciting conflict with another interest group.

“They went to Etche Tipper Park, one place, and held the rally, did anybody stop them? They went to Ikwerre Local Government and held their rally, did anybody stop them?” he asked.

“Why will it now be our business when they go to Rumuwoji playground – a small playground – to go and do rally? They went and paid money when they know the community is in fraction. They now said it is PDP.

“We didn’t do anything when you went to Etche, we didn’t do anything when you went to Ikwerre; it is in Port Harcourt. Does it make sense? If you know you are not prepared for the election, go home and rest. We are prepared for the election, and we know we are going to win this election.”

Additionally, Governor Wike threatened to stop the PDP Presidential Campaign Council from using a stadium if Dr. Abiye Sekibo, the State Director General, persisted in breaking rules.

He claims that the PDP PCC has been given permission to utilize the state’s Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium for the Alhaji Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign.

However, he did clarify that the Presidential Campaign Council had been given permission to use the stadium free of charge as long as it was made available to them 48 hours before the start of the presidential campaign on February 11, 2023.

Sekibo was expressly informed by the governor that he had no jurisdiction to seize control of the stadium a month before the scheduled event.

He added, “Let me also use this opportunity to warn Abiye Sekibo, we have made approval for your presidential candidate to use Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, on February 11th. You have no right to begin to go to the stadium now. We cannot give you access to the stadium now. We can only give you access to the stadium for two days before the occasion for you to prepare.

“Nobody gave you one month. So, if you dare it again, to go and force yourself into the stadium, I will cancel the approval with immediate effect. Dare it again, I will cancel it. Heaven will not fall. In fact, if heaven falls now, we will be happy that it was in our time heaven came down.”
