Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has pleaded not guilty to a two-count indictment presented in court by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Joseph Daudu, is leading Emefiele’s defense, telling the court that his client has been detained for the previous four weeks.

He informed Justice Nicholas Oweibo that the bail application had been submitted and served on the prosecution.

The DSS has already arraigned Emefiele in court, according to Nigeria Global News.

The DSS agents arrived at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State, at 9.20 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to Nigeria Global News, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja granted the release of the suspended CBN Governor and directed the DSS to charge him before a court of competent jurisdiction within one week.

On July 14, it was also reported that Justice Bello Kawu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja annulled the DSS’s custody and interrogation of the embattled Governor.
